What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a term coined in European salons and spas in the early days to describe appeared dimpled skin on the thighs, hips and buttocks of many women.

This dimpled look comes from the pockets of fat stored in the fibrous connective tissue beneath the skin. Think of it as a honeycomb where small fat globules are stored in the panels. When you have excess fat in each panel, which bulge and squeeze the foot, forming the appearance of "cottage cheese".

Interestingly, this fat cellulite is no different than fat found elsewhere in the body as fat from your face. It is the way in which the connective tissue, fat, blood flow and lymphatic drainage intertwine to thicken and harden under the skin of the affected areas that form cellulite.

What causes cellulite to form?

When fat cells within the subcutaneous layer expands, the fat tissue in general will push upwards. This causes the links of collagen (also known as septa) supporting both the upper and lower end of the subcutaneous layer to tension, which in turn results in the uneven surface of the skin.

This irregular surface of the outer skin looks like "orange peel" white light, which many women consider ugly and makes giving up your favorite hot pants and bikini wear.

However, it does not mean that only women with fat thighs and buttocks are formed cellulite on the skin, women with thin or thin thighs could not escape away.

That's because, in addition to the expansion of fat cells that cause cellulite to form in the skin, muscle tissues right below the layer of fat is so important. When these muscles cellulite areas are smooth, soft and slightly toned, which makes your skin and the layer of fat that is also soft and loose and uneven, making the skin 'dimple' and pucker, therefore, that gives the appearance of "cellulite".

Although the appearance of cellulite in thin women may not seem as worse as that occurring in obese women, however it is a pain in the ass for most women who are affected by it.

Note that cellulite is not a physical entity that you can simply get rid of. It is a condition that occurs when more fat is introduced in areas prone to cellulite or have weak muscle structure in these areas of cellulite. In other words, even though you manage to "remove" cellulite and soften your skin, that does not mean that cellulite is completely gone. Try pinching the skin of the affected areas and you will still see the "orange peel".
